Total Film Opinion Article on 12 Things They Should Have Kept in the Harry Potter Films

UK magazine Total Film has an interesting opinion piece/feature online where they lament twelve things that should have been kept in the Harry Potter films. Echoing many sentiments we fans have expressed written and discussed over the years, the list includes some of the following:

*PEEVES: The omission of the pesky poltergeist of Hogwarts has long been a source of the discussion in the fandom. Total Film adds to the chorus as it notes Peeves should have been included for OotP, noting: Pesky prankster Peeves is an anarchic poltergeist whose only goal is to create chaos. His sworn enemy is Argus Filch, the school caretaker, who has to clear up after him. Rumours that he could be the ghost of Jeremy Beadle remain unfounded. Rik Mayall did film a scene as Peeves for Philosopher’s Stone, but it got chopped.

*The Origins of the Marauders Map in Prisoner of Azkaban: If you’ve never read the book, the magic map given to Harry in Prisoner Of Azkaban seems to have ‘lazy plot device’ written all over it.In fact, what it actually had written all over it is ‘Messrs Mooney, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs’, which is a clue as to its origins and a whole subplot about Harry’s dad, Sirius Black and the other map creators being animagii – those with the ability to turn into animals.

*Percy Weasley, Traitor: The magazine discusses the cutting of this subplot to Order of the Phoenix, as they describe the role played by Chris Rankin in the films as follows:  In the film, elder Weasley sprog Percy – now working for the Ministry of Magic – comes across as a slimy yes-man. In the books he’s an all-out traitor, disowning his family and sending Christmas presents back unopened. The film could have run with the idea of Percy going really evil – fiddling his expenses and claiming on a second Gnome or something.

You can read the entire list, which also includes SPEW, Professor Binns, hoarding by Kreacher,  the Headless Hunt and more here via this link. Thanks Kiwi!

agree Peeves, Percy (LOL at the expenses scandal reference), Kreacher and Marauders map at least should all have stayed. Percy and Kreacher because they lead onto events in the seventh book, Peeves just because he’s great (and wouldn’t Rick Mayall be great? why was he cut?), the map could have been explained in a single sentence in the shrieking shack, with Remus and Sirius calling each other by their nicknames and a quick explanation to Harry, without wasting too much time.

I don’t think SPEW is integral, it doesn’t really need to be addressed, even regarding R/Hr kiss really.

Quidditch, either the world cup and Ron aren’t important and Ron is going to get action next film anyway and it would be repetition to have the same in two films. They could even do the chanting in this film.

The other omissions never bothered me.

I agree with some of the things on the list, but not all. Personally, I had enough quidditch with the first films, and seeing it in all the others would have taken valuable time and would have gotten boring, imo.

But I completely agree that the Marauder’s Map, Dobby, Kreacher, Percy and Marietta should have been in the movies with their more complete story lines. I thought it was a mistake to leave out Bagman, but it turns out he really wasn’t that important later, so I guess that decision makes sense.

I missed Peeves, especially when the twins were leaving, and again in Deathly Hallows, but I guess it was OK to not have him. And I missed Harry talking to Nick about Sirius’s death.

What I would add to the list is a better depiction of Barty Jr in the courtroom scene and a better death scene for Barty Sr. And then there is the missing Winky who plays a big role in that part of the story. The other thing that was left out was that Fluer is part veela. I guess it’s not terribly important but it explains why the boys, Ron in particular, get all goofy whenever she’s near them.

The other thing the movies have all missed is the end of the books. They get part of it right and then stop before the full denouement from Dumbledore. So people who only watch the movies and haven’t read the books really never fully get the meaning of what has happened in that particular story.

Enough ranting, though. I’ll stop for today.

i really wish they kept more to the books in general. there was so much that was left out, and for the people who only watch the movies, they wont understand whats happening.

Ok, I’ve been trying to comment on everything on the list in one post, but I keep hitting the wrong button so it refreshes the page.
Let’s sum it up.
I really wish that every detail would’ve been in the movies, but I guess time won’t agree with us here.

For me the most annoying thing left out of the movies, especially OOTP was the little visits Harry and Dumbledore share at the end. The first two movies contained their talks, but the last three have not. There was a whole chapter devoted to Dumbledore informing Harry about what the Prophesy said and what it meant to his future. In Goblet of Fire, you get the impression that maybe LV/Riddle has made a big mistake. These are not only important clues, but show how the relationship between Harry and Dumbledore is progressing.

I’m really just upset about the Percy storyline and the Marauders map.

I totally agree that S.P.E.W., the Marauders, Kreacher, Ron as Quidditch Keeper, and Percy should have been left in. Also, the Quidditch World Cup scenes in the movie were very different from the book, which I didn’t like. Cho’s betrayal was poorly done and Marietta or someone else should have done the betraying.

As much as I would have liked everything on the list to be kept in, I understand why a few things were cut out. Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore and the Headless Hunt, along with the Deathday Party weren’t terribly important.

i disagree, a lot of the list is crucial to the series. the most important, that were for some strange reason cut off, were: 5.the Origin’s of the Marauder’s Map, 7. Ron’s Quidditch Exploits, and 12.Kreacher’s Hoarding. the films felt as if they were incomplete without these scenes in them.
